NOSING AROUND
A recent study conducted by researchers at Barnard College revealed that the
muscle-paralyzing injectable Botox may not only change patients’ appearances but it may also affect the way they feel. According to the study, facial
expressions have a direct effect on patients’ emotions. When they are unable to
express their emotions on their faces, it is more difficult for them to actually
relate to them. “With Botox, a person can respond otherwise normally to an
emotional event, such as a sad movie scene but will have less movement in the
facial muscles that have been injected and, therefore, less feedback to the brain
about such facial expressivity,” says study co-author Joshua Davis, a psychology professor at Barnard College. “The muscle paralysis allows us to isolate the
effects of facial expressions and the subsequent sensory feedback to the brain
that would follow from other factors, such as intentions relating to one’s
expressions and the motor commands to make an expression.”—Nanci McArdle
Botox Paradox
There is good news for those considering
rhinoplasty, thanks to Sam Rizk, F.A.C.S.,
who recently created the new Nose
Digital Graphic Visualizer page to help
clients see what they would look like
with a different nose. The website, www.
drsamrisk.com, allows potential patients
to upload a photo of themselves and
“try on” different nose shapes to decide,
along with Rizk, which one best suits
them by showing what the likely outcome
would be with both a front and side view.
It is just one additional way for potential
patients to plan the necessary steps to
take when considering something as
serious as facial surgery.—N.M.
